Why are we here?
What are the rules?
Listen, debate, decide and move on
Vision: To build a coordinated resource of trained communicators, infrastructure and capabilities to assist our community by providing emergency and supplemental communications.

Why should we establish Strategic Goals & Measurable Objectives?
- Enable better decision making
- Promote accountability
- Distinguish between program success and failure
- Allow for organizational learning and improvement
- Justify budget requests
- Optimize resources
- Establish catalysts for change
- Influence and encourage professional behavior
- Achieving Goals & Objectives creates a positive atmosphere
- If we don't know what we are aiming at, we probably won't hit it
- If we are ever REALLY needed, we'll have a better chance of success
Strategic Goals
- Strategic goals are statements describing critical outcomes essential to achieving our organizational vision, while executing the mission – what the organization must achieve to be successful in the future:
- Introduces the notion of influencing a future that you believe will be different from the present
- Must be outcomes based upon the overall needs of Lansing/Ingham County
- Identify how the Vision will be realized, e.g., take the Vision to the next level of detail and express what will be needed to make it happen
- Broadly focused and address ultimate, long-term results
- Must be realistic, but challenging: able to generate measurable objectives
- ASSIGNMENT: Let’s define no more than six Strategic Goals!
Measurable Objectives
- Measurable Objectives should define what is to be accomplished. These should have someone responsible and a measurable timeline to completion.
- Action statements that have a means of measurement
- Should be longer and more descriptive statement
- Narrow in scope
- Should directly support a Strategic Goal
- Cover a shorter period of time
- ASSIGNMENT: Let's define Objectives to support our Strategic Goals!
Strategic Planning Goals for One Year
- Build upon our current organization of volunteer communicators in such a way that we would be operationally prepared to assist the City of Lansing & Ingham County with their emergency communications needs.
- Seek a higher degree of competency with current capabilities while striving to keep up with newer technologies in order to enhance our future capabilities.
- Improve upon our infrastructure in such a way as to create a more resilient communication support structure for the City & County.
- While attempting to learn from past experiences, and anticipating future needs, we will create plans to support our development.
- Recruitment: We will seek to double our size during the next year.
- It will be our aspiration to increase our level of training, certifications and professionalism individually, as well as a team.
