Amateur Radio Awareness Week
Whereas, Amateur Radio provides a bridge between peoples, societies and countries by creating friendships and the sharing of ideas; and,
Whereas, Throughout its history, Amateur Radio Operators have provided countless hours of community services without compensation; and,
Whereas, Amateur Radio Operators provide services to many of the state's Emergency Response Organizations including, FEMA, The Michigan Department of Human Services, and the Office of Emergency Management, and also serve as weather spotters in the Skywarn program of the National Weather Service; and,
Whereas, In 2005, Amateur Radio Operators provided emergency communications during the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the United States and in the tsunami catastrophe overseas; and,
Whereas, The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) is the leading organization for Amateur Radio in the USA; and,
Whereas, This years Amateur Radio Field Day, taking place June 23-24, will be a 24-hour emergency encampment exercise and demonstration of the Radio Amateurs' skills and readiness to provide communications; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of June 23, 2007, as Amateur Radio Awareness Week in Michigan.
Governor Granholm has declared the week of June 23 as Amateur Radio Awareness Week in Michigan. Amateur radio operators provide services to many Emergency Response Organizations including FEMA, The Michigan Department of Human Services, and the Office of Emergency Management. Amateur radio operators also serve as weather spotters in the Skywarn program of the National Weather Service.
Delta Township is fortunate have many dedicated radio operators ready to respond in the event of an emergency. These personnel are trained to provide emergency radio communications during periods of local, regional or national civil emergencies. These emergencies are not limited to war-related activities, but can include natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, power outages, floods, victim searches and air crashes.
The Delta Township Auxiliary Communications Service (DTACS) was established for volunteers to provide emergency communication services to Delta Township and surrounding communities as needed. It is the commitment of DTACS personnel to provide communications to support local fire, police, rescue, EMS, and other emergency or disaster services organizations as assigned or requested. Their objectives include:
To provide volunteer assistance to any disaster or emergency situation as requested by the Delta Township Emergency Management Division.
To provide alternative emergency communications to and from the Township's Emergency Operations Center (EOC), to the State EOC, and field operations site(s) as required during a major Township emergency or disaster.
To provide methods to relay critical information to the Township EOC, and ultimately to the public, regarding highway closures, shelter locations, public transportation, and housing accommodations to residents as well as guests in our community.
To assist emergency workers in providing critical information to the EOCs and Public Information Officer (PIO).
To provide a two-way radio back-up communication system to any emergency or disaster workers without radio communications during an emergency.
To provide communication interoperability to Field Command, Township EOC, and/or the State EOC.
