2008 Skywarn Training a "Great Success"

The 2008 Skywarn Training on March 29th was a "Great Success" according to Ingham County Skywarn Coordinator Ben Holcomb (WX8BEN). One Hundred and fifty eight individuals from the Lansing area and as far away as Alma, Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor took part in the training session held at LCC's West Campus on Saturday. Read More

Outdoor Warning Siren Education

The City of Lansing has created a pamphlet intended to educate the public about the Outdoor Warning sirens in the Lansing area. The message is that when the Outdoor Warning Sirens sound, seek shelter immediately indoors and tune to local media outlets for information about the warning. Do not call 911 unless there is an emergency.

2007 Tornadoes!

No, not 2007 of them! But Mike Holcomb has generously put together a video of both Tornadoes to impact the Lansing area in the 2007 season including the August 24th Potterville and South Lansing Tornado (Rated EF-3) and the Williamston Tornado of October 18. The Lansing ARPSC group has conveniently encoded this video in Flash Video for your vieweing pleasure. Please be warned that the video is somewhat long and the file download on Dialup is NOT suggested.

Winter Skywarn Training

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, MI is offering Winter Weather Skywarn training for Ingham County on November 13, 2007 from 1900-2030 in the Dawe Conference Room at IRMC. For more details, please check out the Skywarn Training Page.

Volunteers Needed: Silver Bells in the City

The City of Lansing has called upon Amateur Radio to help out in the annual Silver Bells in the City Event. We will need approximately 10 Amateur Radio operators to help out with this event on Friday November 16, 2007. For more information, please Click Here

November 4-10 is Winter Weather Awareness Week

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has declared the week of November 4, 2007 "Winter Weather Awareness Week". Heavy snow, extreme cold, ice and wind routinely affect Michigan during winter and pose dangers to life and property. According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, 37 people in Michigan died due to the exposure to the cold in 2006. To download the rest of this story Click Here

2 dead after EF-2 Tornado touches down in Williamston

Tornado Damage in Williamston
The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids confirmed an EF-2 tornado in Northeastern Ingham County on Friday. The tornado touched down around 2228 EDT on Thursday October 18, 2007 just northeast of Mason and continued through the City of Williamston and out to the county line and into Shiawassee County. Our initial assessments of the damage indicate at least half a dozen homes destroyed.

NCS/Net Control and Message Handling Classes Offered

The Lansing ARPSC group will be offering NCS/Net Control and Message Handling training classes in November. The first class will be held on Saturday November 3 and 1300 and will focus on NCS and Net Operations. The second class will be held the following week on Saturday November 10 at 1300. Both classes will be held at Lansing Firestation 8. Contact Rocky (K8DRB) on the 146.700 or by e-mail at WD8SBO (at) att.net to reserve your spot.

Tornado Damage in South Lansing
The National Weather Service confirms a EF-3 tornado touched down in Eaton County and continued into Ingham County. Spotter reports came in via the Skywarn Net shortly before 16:30 EDT and the ARPSC Damage net continued until after 2030 after activation of both the Lansing EOC and the Ingham County EOC. August 23 Severe Weather!

Severe weather hit the area especially hard on August 23, 2007 as a line of storms traveled from the southwest out of Chicago and towards the Lansing area. There were numerous reports of trees down throughout the area. Read More

ThreatNet Software Training/Skywarn Net Control Training

Amateur Radio Awareness Week

Governor Granholm has declared the week of June 23 as Amateur Radio Awareness Week in Michigan. Amateur radio operators provide services to many Emergency Response Organizations including FEMA, The Michigan Department of Human Services, and the Office of Emergency Management. Amateur radio operators also serve as weather spotters in the Skywarn program of the National Weather Service. Read More
