Amateur Radio Public Service Events

Calling all Amateurs in the Central Michigan Area:
We Need You!

One of the most unique things about the Amateur Radio Hobby and Ham Radio Operators in general, is our ability to do what many are not able to do:
Communicate almost anywhere and at almost any time.
Provided of course, we are prepared!

Part of being ready in times of need is to routinely check and operate your equipment.  If you are interested in a unique way to stay prepared, while giving back to your community in a more tangible way than to simply writing a check, then try volunteering to support a public service event.

What do you need?

EQUIPMENT
An HT- ("Handie Talkie" or portable hand held radio)
Usually just a simple 2meter HT will do. Sometimes the 440Mhz band is also used.
Spare batteries-  A must!  Keep them charged and ready to go.
Follow manufacturers recommendations for "cycling" or "exercising" your batteries.  Check them often.  Be ready!
A Folding Chair- Some events can last most of a day and there may be no place to sit.

SAFETY
A small first aid kit-  Don't let a minor cut or scrape slow you down.
Water-  A must.

PERSONAL COMFORT
Bug spray
Snacks such as energy bars, candy bars etc.
Hat
Rain gear.
Sunscreen

OPTIONAL ITEMS
Bicycle- On most events having someone be able to "roam" the course can be very helpful. You might consider bringing your bike to an event!  If it is a walk/run event, you'd need to move very slowly and carefully of course. Near the end of the event you would be able to clear the route quicker than someone on foot.
A longer, flexible whip for your HT-  They have significant gain over the "rubber duck" antennas which come with all HT's.

KNOWLEDGE!
Know how to program and use your equipment!  If you need assistance with that brand new HT, there are plenty of other Hams around that can help.
